?Äutßor's Mote
orning's Gate was inspired by a diary written by a young Australian soldier in 1916. In the novel, all that relates to the First World War is based upon that diary and extensive research undertaken to verify it. The rest of the novel is fiction, and except with regard to public figures, none of the characters is intended to bear any resemblance to real people, either living or dead.
I am indebted to my friend Bill Mulholland for his knowl-edge and assistance with research; and to my husband, who willingly relived some harrowing experiences in the Persian Gulf in the cause of authenticity. In Melbourne, Jenny Carew worked hard on my behalf with a very vague brief indeed; and two people, Carol and Gary Matthews, were very kind in helping a complete stranger in her quest for information about old Dandenong.
It remains to be said that I could not have written about the Australian Imperial Force without referring constantly to several books: The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918 by C.E.W. Bean (University of Queensland Press), . The Anzacs by Patsy Adam-Smith (Nelson), The Broken Years by Bill Gammage (Penguin), and Pozieres by Peter Charlton (Leo Cooper).
