FOREWORD by RONALD LAUDER I am proud to participate in this historic auction, which not only benefits Holocaust victims and their families, but also offers all of us, who care so deeply a significant commemorative opportunity. This is a sale of a poignant "fragment of history" and is unique in post-World War II Jewish chronology. It has been over 50 years in the making and is the culmination of intensive efforts by many disparate entities including, among others, Simon Wiesenthal, ARTnews, the World Jewish Congress, the Austrian Jewish Comniunity and, particularly, the current Austrian Government, which deserves special praise tor its commitment and determination to the restitution process. Christies gracious sponsorship of the Mauerbach auction on a non-profit basis will allow us to distribute the proceeds to the survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants who so rightfully deseive such compensation.
