Organization J-Jach day millions of us go to work in organizations, are educated or healed in organizations, whUe others of us are bom or die within organizations. The individuals who guide the fortunes of these organizations are managers, and it is about them, their skills, roles, and responsibilities, that I have written Management. The actions and decisions of managers, whether they be in large or small, profit or not-for-profit organizations, have a profound impact on all of us. My hope is that readers of Management will be better able to execute the crucial responsibility of managing. When I first began writing this book, I had several objectives in mind. I wanted to write a book that summarizes contemporary management literature in order to convey to the reader the nature of the management process. Further, I wanted this book to enhance student skills in understanding the managerial role and how the managerial role influences organizational performance. Finally, I wanted the book to facilitate the reader's understanding of the importance of management vis-a-vis other organizational functions and the broader social context. Overall, the objectives of the book are perhaps best characterized by the old folk saying "you can give people fish and they'll eat for a day, but if you teach them how to fish, they'll eat for a lifetime." Rather than simply summarizing various studies and theories, the book will describe hoio and why the management process operates and how managers can better understand, faciEtate, and more effectively manage the various functional activities inherent in their jobs. Management is organized around the traditional management functions of planning, leading, organizing, and controlling; a framework that effectively captures the essence of the manager's job.
