PREFACE TO THIRD EDITION Since the first edition of this book was published, in late 1936, the favourable reception accorded to it has necessitated a second edition and three reprints of the first two editions. The present edition includes a number of new features and illustrations, and an increase in the number of pages by about one-fifth, to accommodate the new matter. Much of the earlier material has been brought up to date and certain items now of lesser interest have been omitted, although in one or two instances where vehicles fitted with earlier models of C.I. engines are known to be still in existence, the relevant matter has been retained. The new features include more recent servicing methods, tools and data, more particularly those relating to fuel injection equipment. The appendices dealing with the maintenance of well-known makes of C.I. transport engines have been much extended and a good deal of useful data in regard to the valves, pistons, cylinders, lubrication, fuel injection system, valve and injection timing, etc., will be found in these maintenance notes. Finally, the index—a glance at which will indicate the wide field covered—has been extended considerably, with the object of assisting the reader to find the particular items in which he is interested, as speedily as possible.
