The City and the People
In an uncompromising world of extremes, Lisbon steers for the happy medium. Don't expect to be shown the world's widest plaza or tallest cathedral. Extravagant claims are few. Most superlatives are in the people themselves—the kindest and most dignified you're likely to meet. And the most modest.
With a keen eye for beauty, they decorate their balconies with flower pots, the walls with patterned tiles, the sidewalks with mosaics. Old women in black take their brightly decorated bread bags to the bakery to be filled with oven-warm rolls. Any neighbourhood park keeps a few swans or ducks as pets; in the bigger ones peacocks squat in the trees or strut across your path. But do save some film for the wide-angle sights. This is a city of hills and
