Two types of papers are considered for pub-lication: (a) full papers written in the style outlined below, and (b) short communications reporting concise pieces ofwork that lead to positive conclusions. Short communi-cations should not normally exceed 1500 words andshould not contain more than 2 figures.Address for Contributors. Send manuscripts to A. Mur-ray Harper, M.D., Wellcome Surgical Institute, Univer-sity of Glasgow, Garscube Estate, Bearsden Road,Bearsden, Glasgow G61 1QH, Scotland; telephone (041)942-2248.Form of Manuscripts.(a)Submit manuscript in triplicate, typewritten withdouble spacing throughout and with margins at least 2.5cm wide. (Only the original manuscript and all sets offigures will be returned if a paper submitted for publica-tion is rejected. The photocopies will be destroyed. Anyauthor who wishes all copies of his or her paper returnedin the event of rejection should indicate this when firstsubmitting the manuscript.)(b)Each manuscript must have a title page which in-cludes only the title, authors' names, laboratory of origin, name, address, and telephone number of the person towhom proofs and reprint requests should be addressed, and any necessary footnotes. Indicate specific affiliationsof each author. Information concerning sources of finan-cial support should be placed in an Acknowledgment sec-tion, between Discussion and References.(c)The page following the title page should include abrief abstract of up to 200 words (100 for short communi-cations), up to six key words or terms, and a running titlenot exceeding 45 letters and spaces.(d)Papers should be organized in the standard fashion,i.e., introduction giving the reasons for the investigation, methods, results, and discussion. Headings of sectionsmay be omitted in short communications.(e)In mathematical copy, be precise about alignmentof numerals, letters, and symbols; hand-letter any thatcannot be typewritten. Make a circled notation in thenearest margin to identify any possibly ambiguouscharacter such as 1 (one or el), 0 (zero or oh), X (multipli-cations sign or ex), Greek letters, script letters, diacriticalmarks, and prime, and certain letters (e.g., C, K, P) inwhich capitals and lower case are nearly indistinguishablewhen handwritten. Use the simplest form of equation thatcan be made by ordinary mathematical calculation; forinstance:Results should be expressed in absolute terms, e.g., Ci,dps, dpm.(h)For tracer kinetic terminology, please useguidelines as described in Brownell et al. (1968),"Nomenclature for tracer kinetics," Int J Appl RadiatI sot 19:249-262.(i)Drug names should be the official or approvednames; trade names or common names may be given inparentheses where the drug is first mentioned.Tables and Figures.(a)Tables and figures should be so constructed thatthey, together with their captions and legends, will beintelligible with minimal reference to the text.(b)Each table should be on a separate page at the endof the manuscript.(c)Each figure must be accompanied by an explana-tory legend typewritten with double spacing. Do not use aseparate sheet for each legend. Explain all symbols usedin the figure.(d)The units of measure must be indicated clearly inthe column headings of a table or the coordinates of afigure. If the unit of measure is the same for all the data ina table, it may be given in the table title or in a footnote tobe printed immediately below the table.(e)Data should be presented as clearly defined meanvalues with some measure of their dispersion (standarddeviation, range) and an appropriate indication of thestatistical significance of differences from control values. The number of individual values represented by a meanshould be indicated.(f)Line drawings should be submitted as at least twosets of clear glossy prints, with lettering of high standardand large enough to be legible when reduced. Halftonephotographs should be submitted in triplicate in the formof original photographic prints; photocopies are often in-adequate for proper editorial evaluation and cause delayin editorial handling. An overlay should be providedshowing which area of the photograph requires greatestdefinition, and scale bars should be provided on thephotograph. The Publisher guarantees to reproducephotomicrographs to the satisfaction of the author. The maximum final size of any figure in the printedjournal will be 17 by 23 cm (7 by 9lA> inches). On the backof each figure give the figure number and authors' namesand indicate the top of the figure with an arrow. Colorillustrations will be charged to the author; the cost will begiven upon request.(g)Symbols on graphs, etc., should be inserted by theauthor using the following standard characters:O A A ? x +
