INTRODUCTION
John Barry fans lurk in the most unexpected places. FeUini once said that Goldfinger was his favourite fdm score, Alice Cooper claimed that the Goldfinger title song inspired him to become a performer, and the Pope apparently listens to Dances with Wolves.
Since the beginning of Barry's career, there have been fans encompassing the full spectrum of devotion, from the casual enthusiast to the lifelong obsessive. Among musicians, his influence has always been enormous, but recently there has been an upsurge in recognisably Barry-inspired work. Listen to the music of contemporary artists from Portishead, Orbital and Morcheeba to Barry Adamson, Pulp and Mono, and film composer David Arnold, and you'll hear the unmistakable sound of John Barry.
The term 'Barryesque' has become standard music terminology to describe a soaring but plaintive string-style, and its impact has been widespread. 'Seeing You Only Live Twice tainted me for life,' says David Arnold. 'Apart from the opening sequence, there was that incredible string melody, and the music completely blew my head off. It was a fairiy substantial event for me that just got me hooked, and I knew that was what I wanted to do for a Uving.'
