PREFACE
When I wrote this little Introduction in 1945, I sought to mediate the findings of the New Testament scholars in a simple untechnical form. Many, I am grateful to say, found the book useful. But these were austere days in 1945, and, because I was limited to 40,000 words, I must needs confine myself to what I deemed the more important among the New Testament's twenty-seven books. Now, however, the SCM Press have allowed me to fill in the gaps—the new chapters are 14,15,16,18, 19,21,25,26 and 27—and I hope that in this 'definitive' form (if so pretentious an adjective may be applied to so small a book) it will serve its original purpose even better.
