Intermediate Context English is a fourth year coursebook designed for adolescent and aduit learners who have covered basic structures and vocabulary such as those dealt with in 'Active Context English'. This book not only provides further practice of the fundamental structures and lexis already covered in Books 1-3 of 'Active Context English', but alsó introduces more sophisticated grammar points, idioms and vocabulary items. By combining revision with carefully chosen new material 'Intermediate Context English' provides a transition from "Active Context English' to 'Broader Context English', preparing students to cope with the wider-ranging demands of coursebooks at the level of Broader Context English. The material taught and practised throughout this book is particularly suitable for students working towards the examination of Cambridge First Certificate in English, Local Syndicate. Enough material is provided in the eighteen Units to cover the work of an academic year consisting of three or four classes of fifty minutes each per week, with sufficient flexibility and variety in the elements of each Unit to match the requirements of classes of various sizes and abilities. The material in Intermediate Context English provides aurai, oral and written practice. Students at intermediate level need to be trained to use what they already know of the language in combination with the items they have just been taught, in a variety of situations which are both functional and notional. During class time aurai and oral work should be concentrated on, with written work taking up a relatively small part of the totál lesson. In class students should be encouraged to express their ideas and talk about themselves and whatever interests them. The Units of this course are planned so as to maintain maximum student interest and participation. The formát of each Unit is deliberately varied in order to bring an element of'surprise' to the lessons. Therefore instead of beginning every Unit with an episode in the story that develops throughout the book, situations involving recurring characters have been interspersed with other passages illustrating new patterns and giving rise to discussion. Structural and lexical items taught throughout the book are Consolidated in the exercises. Comprehension and Vocabulary Practice exercises reinforce the items taught in each Unit and frequent Use of English exercises revise grammatical structures, idioms and vocabulary. Simple grammar explanations have been given throughout the book as it is generally felt that at this level it often simplifies the learning process if the student knows how and why certain structures function.
