TO THE TEACHERUVTRODUCIIVG IMAGESIMAGES 1 2: English for Beginners is a visually exciting series for adult and young adult learners of English. Each lesson in IMAGES presents a practical, real-life situation through a full-page stoiy sequence of photographs. The photos immediately capture the students' interest and clarify the meaning and context of the language. Each photo presentation is followed by a practice page containing a variety of exercises reinforcing the functions and structures introduced in the lesson and offering opportunities for communicative activities. A Review and Discover section after every six lessons provides additional review as well as vocabulary enrichment. An accompanying tape program offers an integrated listening skills strand.WHO IS IT FOR?IMAGES is designed to be equally effective in a variety of learning situations: whole class instruction, individualized instruction in a multi-level classroom, or independent study in a language lab or at home. Vocabulaiy and structures are presented in a clear, carefully controlled manner. Each lesson introduces only a select number of new lexical and structural items, carefully integrated with previously introduced material.IMAGES 1 has been particularly developed for the student who has no previous knowledge of English. IMAGES 2 is a continuation of IMAGES 1, and takes the student through the beginner level to the advanced beginner/intermediate stage. The presentation of language through realistic dialogues and the emphasis on meaningful oral practice makes IMAGES 2 an ideal introductory text for the false beginner with a more than basic passive knowledge of English.HOW DOES IT WORK?Two questions served as guidelines and criteria for determining the content of IMAGES: 1) What do non-English speakers most immediately need to understand and express in order to cope in an English-speaking environment? 2) What is the most direct and natural form in which these language skills can be taught and learned? Functions and notions were selected according to the first criterion. A photographic format, conveying real-life situations toough conversations and narratives, was chosen in answer to the second question. Lessons were then developed, linked to a thoughtful structural grading of the material. The resulting program, IMAGES, thus offers beginning students unique access to English both from a functional perspective (what they need to understand and express) and from a grammatical perspective (what they need to generate their own language).Stumbling blocks to comprehension are minimized in IMAGES by the gradual introduction of new vocabulary, and the clear conveyance of meaning through the photographs. This facilitates the students' recognition of the structural patterns and rules that are at work. Highlighted excerpts illustrating these rules aid this discovery process. Communicative use of the language is fostered by practice exercises which provide ample opportunity for pair work and role play. The emphasis is on students using grammar to create language that suits their needs.COMPONENTS OF THE IMAGES 2 PROGRAMTHE STUDENT BOOK36 clearly designed and carefully sequenced lessons teach and reinforce a balance of functions and structures through photographic presentations of real-life situations. An answer key, which can be removed at the teacher's discretion, is provided at the back of the student book.THE TEACHER'S EDITIONA 16-page guide for the classroom teacher, offering suggestions for expanding and reinforcing each lesson, precedes a full-size reprint of the student book. Texts for the unscripted listening comprehension activities found on the tapes are provided for teachers who wish to incorporate the developmental listening skiU strand into their program but do not have access to the tapes.THE TAPE PROGRAMTwo cassettes accompany IMAGES 2. The dialogue or narrative from each photo presentation page is recorded in several ways for listening, practice, and role play. There are four simple instructions that smdents need to learn in order to respond to the listening activities: "Listen." "Listen and repeat." "Let's have a conversation. I begin." "Let's have a conversation. You begin." In addition, the tapes present an important unscripted listening skills strand. A small illustration on each Review page and at the bottom of every third lesson in the student text reminds the student (and teacher) that a listening comprehension activity is available on the tape. The format follows a clear pattern which students can learn easily. Thus, there are no difficulties for students using the program independently.HOW TO USE THIS BOOKIndividualized Instruction and Independent StudyIMAGES 2 is ideally suited for use by students in a multi-level classroom, or for independent practice and study in the language lab or at home. The method is simple, and easily conveyed to the student by means of the instructions on the tape, or a short demonstration by the teacher.
