Lesson 1 a First, read about the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of China The Great Wall of China is the longest structure which has ever been built. It has a total length of 6400 kilométrés and was made completely by hand. The building of the wall began around 400 BC and continued from time to time until around AD 1600. It was built by the Chinese to protect the northern border of China against invaders. Although the wall gave protection from minor attacks, it proved little defence against a major invasion. For example, the Mongol leader, Genghis Khan, crossed the wall in the 1200s and conquered most of China. The wall was rebuilt during the Ming dynasty, between 1368 and 1644, and almost all the present structure dates from then. The Chinese no longer use the wall for defence. Nowadays it attracts thousands of visitors from ali over the world.
