Preface
This self-assessment book has been organised in 7 sections; the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum, small bowel, the plain abdomen, large bowel, hepatobiliary tree and pancreas, liver and portal system.
Although each question/answer is independent it is better to work through a section at a time. Within each section the examples tend to get harder and the answers from previous examples often help one to reach a diagnosis of more difficult cases.
To recognise an abnormality one has to know the normal. With this in mind the cases have been arranged so that the earlier and easier examples of each set have only one major abnormality and the rest of the study can be used as a 'normal' reference. During the text the student is sometimes referred to previous examples for comparison.
The second aim of this book is to function as an atlas. For this purpose an index of diagnosis for quick reference is included.
Most common conditions are illustrated once, or sometimes twice in different imaging modalities.
Ultrasound will always be difficult for students and junior doctors to interpret. Nearly all the ultrasounds are in the same plane in an attempt to keep orientation straight forward. All the clinical histories are relevant and helpful.
