Preface to Second Edition
In preparing this second edition the authors did not feel impelled to modify the general character of the book. Most changes or deletions made in the original text were directed toward simplification of treatment, elimination of material considered nonessential, clarification of presentation, or updating of available information. Particular attention was paid to the use of latest best values of physical constants, and revision of references for further reading.
At the same time a number of significant additions were made. In connection with crystal structure the concepts of space lattice and space group have been introduced. The treatment of adsorption has been expanded to include the various types of isotherms, and the use of adsorption for surface area determination. A section has been added on the Donnan equilibrium. In the chapter on Thermochemistry a treatment of differential heats of solution and dilution has been included, as well as a table on the heat capacities of substances as a function of temperature. The chapter on Atomic Structure and Radioactivity has been brought up to date, and an entire new chapter has been added on Photochemistry. All problems were checked carefully, and their number has been increased by over 30 per cent.
The authors wish to thank their many friends, colleagues, and associates for taking the trouble to write in suggestions and comments, and for calling attention to errors and misprints. It is hoped that such correspondence will continue. The comments and reactions received were invaluable aids in revision and improvement of the text.
