COUNTDOWN One hundred fathoms deep under the earth, • one hundred fathoms deep in the sea someone is counting off our seconds from ten to zero. My pipe bums for half an hour if it doesn't go out. My mind will work for another thirty years. The nail I hammer in the wall lasts twice as long. What I put down on paper will fade if years from now it doesn't catch fire. The doorsill, made of stone, doesn't crumble easily. Longer than all, apart from the ocean, the earth, moss and certain natural phenomena, man lasts longest. Until the one deep in the earth has counted off our seconds from ten to zero.
