PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION
The long interval which has elapsed since the publication of the Third Edition of this book in July, 1939, is of course due largely to circumstances arising directly out of the war.
However, in addition to this inevitable delay, we have deliberately deferred re-publication for the last 2 to 3 years, because we have felt that we should wait until work published during the war period (particularly in what were then enemy countries) should receive the fullest consideration. Actually the war-time issues of many publications in which work on fluorescence analysis occurs, have become available in this country only very slowly.
It now appears that the above policy has been amply justified by the number and importance of the papers which have gradually come to light. Most of these papers have now been checked where possible and the results recorded fully in these pages.
In addition to the inclusion of this and other new work, the opportunity has been taken to revise the whole text. Thus, a good deal of " dead wood " has been cut out, and large portions of the remainder of the book have been completely rewritten. In particular, attention may be drawn to an entirely new section dealing exclusively with the applications of fluorescence analysis to the evaluation of vitamin activity ; and also to the many new photographs of fluorescence phenomena.
