INTRODUCTION This is the 38th consecutive year in which FAO has issued, under various tities, an annuai review of worid production, trade, consumption and prices of fertilizers, in 1978, in order to conform to other FAO statistical publications, it was renamed the FAO Fertilizer Yearbook. The publication of this yearbool< has been made possible by the cooperation of the governments, to which FAO is grateful for supplying most of the information through the FAO fertilizer questionnaire. FAO is also grateful to the members of the Ad Hoc Working Party on Fertilizer Statistics, which Includes representatives of the fertilizer industry, for their help in the improvement of geographical coverage of the data. On the basis of newly available information, revisions have been made to the data so as to enhance their quality and reliability. In order to enlarge the time coverage, abbreviated country names and products are shown only in English. Unabbreviated names of countries and of products are given in English, French and Spanish immediately before the tables. FAO welcomes suggestions from readers for the improvement of this publication.
