EUROPE AND ASIA IN THE GLOBALIZING WORLD • EU-JAPAN SYMPOSIUM Foreword The Hungarian EU Presidency was rich in high-level events related to Asia. Hungary hosted two ASEM meetings: Gödöllő, a town near Budapest received ASEM senior officials on 18-19 April 2011 and foreign ministers on 6-7 June 2011. Hungary was also greatly honoured that the second round of the strategic dialogue between the EU and the People's Republic of China was held in Gödöllő on 12 May. The catastrophic earthquake in Japan, followed by the tsunami and nuclear disaster raised a challenge to the Hungarian Presidency. Hungary did her utmost to offer immediate help to the victims of the triple disaster. The historic EU-Japan Summit in May succeeded in re-energizing the relations between the EU and Japan and also demonstrated the support and solidarity of the EU after the terrible catastrophe. The EU-Japan Symposium, held in Budapest on 3 March 2011, provided us with an excellent opportunity to discuss the current issues of EU-Japan relations, the foreign policy and security environment of East Asia, and the future of EU-Asia relations, focusing on the ASEM process more widely. The symposium, organized by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Hungary in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry of Japan, the European External Action Service and the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs under the title "Europe and Asia in the globalizing world", served as a "preparatory meeting" for the EU-Asia events during the Hungarian Presidency. By publishing the studies in this volume we wish to introduce the results of the EU-Japan Symposium to a wider range of people interested in the relations between Europe and Asia. We would like to thank all lecturers and panelists of the symposium, the organizers and also those who took part in compiling this volume.
