Introduction
Using this book
English Grammar Lessons revises and extends the grammatical knowledge of upper-intermediate and good mid-intermediate learners. The book is suitable for classes preparing for the Cambridge First Cerrificate examination.
English Grammar Lessons can be used in three main ways:
The thirty-two units can be worked through in the order they are presented in the Contents and used as a grammar course.
They can be integrated with skills work, again following the sequence suggested in the Contents, to form a grammatically-focused general course.
The units can also be used selectively and in any order, as they are independent of each other. They can be employed to teach or revise any specific area of grammar that learners are having difficulty with in their oral or written work. To facilitate this selective use, the units are listed by 'grammar theme' in a Grammar topic table. A teacher wishing to teach or revise a theme such as tenses or modal verbs can use any or all of the group of units which deal with that theme.
The structure of each unit
Each unit is made up of four parts, each one page long.
A The starting activities
The starting activities are short activities which introduce the grammar topic of the unit. In these starting activities learners talk briefly in pairs (or as a class), using or discussing individual elements of the grammar topic. This prepares learners for the explanations of when and how to use the grammar which come in the 'Grammar guide'.
B The grammar guide
The grammar guide contains a summary of all the grammar that the learners need for that unit. It is for them to read individually, in groups, or together as a class, after they have done the starting activities. Alternatively, teachers may sometimes wish to ask learners to read the grammar guide at home or in class, before they do the starting activines (if the grammar topic is a parricularly difficult one for the class for example). It is also possible for the relevant part of the grammar guide only to be referred to before or after the learners do each starting activity.
