PREFACE
Those who teach pupils of approximately twelve to thirteen, and who believe that personal explanations are better than printed ones, will find this book supplies their need, that of a book containing sufficient exercises for one year's oral and written work.
It is an adaptable book. It can be used in the post-Primary school, in Central schools and in second-year forms of Secondary schools. The range of material, providing suitable exercises for those who progress slowly and painfully as well as for those stimulated by "a hard nut to crack", makes this possible.
The section on the Simple Sentence can be used for revision of work on the Parts of the Sentence and Parts of Speech before the next section, the study of Multiple and Complex Sentences, is attacked. Technical terms are used sparingly, but when they are necessary, the terminology of the Joint Committee is followed. Constant oral work is necessary, and this section is designedly full in order to provide for it. As so many sentences for analysis are given, the author has not included many sentences purely for parsing.
The basis of this book is the problems of English which children find difficult. The wording of exercises has been made as simple and clear as possible, and usually an example is given so that pupils can understand exactly what is required without a lengthy explanation on the teacher's part. Many exercises are included to enable pupils to conquer their usual difficulties, and avoid the usual pitfalls.
