The Age of Engines This is the age of engines. Engines move cars, trains, ships, and airplanes. In factories, engines power the machines that weave our clothes, print our books, and make all the other things we use. At home, engines run machines that heat our rooms, clean our floors, and wash our clothes and dishes. Before engines existed, a man had to use his own muscles if he wanted to move or change anything. When he wanted to go somewhere, he walked. If he wished to move a heavy building-stone, he carried or dragged it.
