Eilat, Israel's Red Sea riviera, is well known all over the world today as the place where the sun spends the winter b ring ing with it thousands of holidaymakers by land, sea and air. They fly in by direct flights from ali over Europe; drive in with the comfort of luxury air-conditioned coaches from the north of israel, or from Egypt to the south; and sail in on priváté yachts and ocean-going cruise ships. Waiting for them in Israel's southernmost city, uniquely situated on the narrow little strip of land where the mountains of Sinai and the desert of the Arava Valley meet the brilliant blue crystal clear waters of the Red Sea, are the attractions of all three plus the warm welcome of the residents and a large choice of brand new modern hotels with all the amenities a dynamic and popular international vacation resort has to offer.
Today almost a millión visitors arrive in Eilat throughout the year to swim, sunbathe, snor-kel, scuba dive, windsurf, water and parachute ski, sail, go deep-sea fishing, ride on camels, tour the desert, birdwatch or simply to relax.
Yet, as those hardy, intrepid travellers who dared to make the trip to Eilat in the 50's and early 60's vividly remember, Eilat was not always like it is today
