DPrefaceThe editors of the present series embarked on a long planned still completely new mission when they undertook the task of publishing and commenting the written ancient Greak, Roman, Syriac and most important epigraphic sources on Roman Pannónia (from the beginnings to 582 AD). Two volumes of the series have been published so far in Hungarian with Hungarian translations and the success of these encouraged us to publish the volumes in English as well. We believe this work is needed on an international level, too. The sources on Pannónia have never ever been published together. The geographical knowledge of the ancient world about Pannónia was summarised by István Borzsák in 1936 in his doctoral thesis. Later Izabella G. Nagy studied ancient authors relevant to the history of Pannónia in the second century AD in her MA thesis that was never published. A. M ócsy briefly summed up several times during his career the data from ancient authors on Pannónia. The task of preparing such a collection of sources was undertook in the mid seventies by András Mócsy, Tibor Nagy, István Bóna és Samu Szádeczky-Kardoss, who planned to treat the sources relevant to the history of the Central Danube Basin before the conquest of Árpád.^ The responsible of the first volume was A. Mócsy who would have collected the sources up to 284, the second volume would have been edited by T. Nagy up to 568, while the collection of sources on Avar history would have been compiled by I. Bona and S. Szádeczky-Kardoss. Out of the planned work onl^ the edition of Greek sources of Avar history was published by S. Szádeczky-Kardoss and Terézia Olajos, the latter author lately compiled Greek sources from the 9th century. In his university author-reading courses A. Mócsy dealt with various sources deliberately and the work1Borzsák 1936. András Alföldi deliberately prepared for a systematic review of the sources on Pannónia, but he had no time left for it during his career in Hungary: A. Alföldi, A honfoglalás előtti Magyarország története és kultúrtörténete részletes feldolgozásának terve (Beadvány a M. Tud. Akadémia Archaeológiai bizottságához.)
