ForewordThe Committee on Publications of NCTE is pleased to offer to the profession this second practical classroom work on the varieties of English spoken by Americans. The publication is sponsored by the Commission on the English Language. An earlier Council publication, Dialects U.S.A., by Jean Malmstrom and Annabel Ashley, suggested many classroom practices for introducing students to regional dialects. This volume by Professor Shuy extends the treatment of the earlier book and makes use of more recent research in linguistic geography, relying especially on more detailed geographical knowledge, recent studies of urban dialects, and a more precise appraisal of social dialects. As of September 1967, Dr. Shuy is Director of Urban Language Study and Materials Information Center at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, D.C. With the growing attention to the study of the English language in our schools, the publication should provide teachers with a valuable resource.James R. Squire Chairman
