At first, there was ocean, miles and miles of ocean. No land. Just wind and waves. Then the hot center of the earth burst through the ocean bottom and red molten lava shot through the water. Over and over again it happened. The ocean boiled. Lava piled on top of lava. And slowly, but violently, over millions of years, mountains grew under the water.Four or five million years ago, some of those mountains reached the air . . . and the Galápagos Islands were born.
