Die Erlösung spielen
To play the Redemption
The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play dates back more than 350 years. 1990 is the 39th performance year. It began with the vow during the plague in 1633, of which the Chronicle reports:" in this time of suffering the village councils of the Six and Twelve met and vowed to perform the Passion Play every 10 years, and from this time on not a single person more died." The Passion was performed for the first time in 1634 in the graveyard and since then it has been given every 10 years. On two occasions there were no performances, in 1770 and 1970, but there have been three additional performances over the years, in 1815 to give thanks for the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and again in 1934 and 1984 to celebrate the 300th and 350th anniversaries.
After modest beginnings, up to 1710 there was only one performance in the years when the play was given and up to 1760 two performances, the Oberammergau Passion Play has developed in a way which was totally unforseeble. What is surprising about it is not only its unique continuity, but also the aura which it has acquired in the course of its history. In this century alone there have been more than four million spectators, and in the last century there were over 100,000 several years in spite of difficult travelling conditions. In addition the Oberammergau Passion Play has been taken as a model several times. In the 18th century Father Ferdinand Rosner's "Passio nova" was adopted in several places in Bavaria and Austria, as was the Passion Text of Father Othmar Weis in the 19th century. Finally, in the 20th century, Passion Plays on the Oberammergau model have been performed in North and South America.
As in other areas of life, the fact that something has been done once may create confidence that it can be done again, but it does not mean that repetition will automatically be easier. This applies equally to the Passion Play, which is not an icon or museum piece which could be reproduced as such without relation to the present. On the contrary, it must always be created afresh. To put it metaphorically, the melody which has to be played here can be made to sound only on the strings of a person's own life. The Passion can only live if the participants bring it to life through their own individuality.
In addition this means that the people of Oberammergau must be willing to take part in the Play. In 1990, for example, approximately 1950 of the total of 5082 inhabitants are taking parts; 1530 adults and 420 children. They are sharing in the many different tasks which are involved in 98 performances each lasdng about five and a half hours. There are about 1500 actors performing on the stage (in alternating groups), more than 120 in speaking parts and with two performers for each of the 18 leading roles. There are 20 musical secuons performed by 83 instrumentalists and 82
