CHAPTER ONE 4Come back here you little hell-catP Jake's voice echoed in the still desert air as Lynette Harris ran swiftly across the hard parched earth towards the mountainous rocks ahead. Glancing furtively over her shoulder at the knot of men and horses, she saw that Jaké was running towards his horse-and his rifle. 'Jeez boss, that dame's taking our gold!' Taking no notice of his companion's shout, Jaké lifted the rifle to his shoulder in one smooth movement, calmly sighting along the barrel at the síim, slight figure of the girh 'Stop, or FII shootP Ignoring Jake's command, Lyn hitched up her long skirts as she began to scramble over the outlying large stones, her movements hampered by the heavy leather satchel slung over her shoulder. Beginning to climb, she quickly dodged behind a rocky pillar as a whining nőise and the hard smack of a buliét a foot away warned her of Jake's serious intent. Lyn could hear her own laboured breathing, the heavy pounding of her heart as she drove her tired, weary body on upwards, her feet slipping and sliding over the hard, gránité surface of the rocks. Sweat ran down her face, the thin, almost transparent blouse clinging to her damp body as perspijration trickled down between the high peaks of her breasts. For a moment her mind went blank. The fierce Mexican sun was so hot, burning down on her neck and back as she searched for a foothold, that it was hard to concentrate on what she had to do.
