Foreword Like many wlio grew up in a Christian family, some of whose relatives had gone into the mission field', I was used to missionaries coming home and giving illustrated talks about what they did. Like many, I had no idea what on earth they were talking about. Now I realise some of the pain they went through, trying to communicate something vital with those who wanted to know, but who had nothing in their own experience to link it with. It was only when I went to Africa for the first time, in 1985, on sabbatical leave from the parish where I worked, that I began to understand. I had the privilege of being in Tanzania and Kenya for seven weeks, doing virtually nothing! So I was able to talce in the atmosphere, the space, the crowds of people walking, the heat, the hopes and fears, the fragility of life and the depth of the faith that enabled so many to cope. How do you capture, and communicate, an experience of such intensity that in two weeks your life can be changed?
