Foreword
'My dad robs banks. He robs banks and kisses lots of women. He races cars and he smokes funny fags. He's killed two people, a long time ago and I'm not supposed to tell. I think he's fibbing. He's got two big guns in the bedroom and bullets in the garage. No one at school knows. It's my secret.
'When it's dark I get scared of the monsters. Last night when I woke up there were these big black monsters - two of them. The one under my bed was the biggest. I knew he was there, I could see the shadows. Him and his friend were watching me. Big bad monster number two was in the cupboard. . . behind my toys, I could hear him breathing loud and I could see him with my torch. Special torch, for my dad's work. I could see the two monsters and hear them, but I wasn't scared 'cos I could jump off my bed and across my room before the one under my bed could grab my legs and the one in the cupboard could jump on my back. I've given them names. I call them Boris and Morris. Like the puppet spiders on the telly.'
This is the beginning of a short story I wrote in 1999. Most of it is true. There were all kinds of monsters in my house
