Preface
The ideas expressed in this book represent a melding of management philosophies, theories, and tools that have been developed and implemented in business and education in every industrialized nation. The contribution of the Galileo Quality Institute is to create a freestanding program that:
¦ Can be easily implemented in classrooms
¦ Facilitates teamwork
¦ Supplies easy-to-use tools and techniques
¦ Emphasizes teacher, student, and parent involvement
Many people have contributed to the creation of this book. Many fine teachers, administrators, and students have shared their experiences and ideas with me. Within the Total Quality paradigm, students and society are viewed as the customers of education; all programs provided at the school focus on meeting customer needs. The results are significant: student performance improves, the dropout rate and incidence of deviant behavior decrease, work and academic performance for graduates improves, and a better learning and working environment is created.
Various publications and videos by such organizations as the American Management Association, the American Society for Quality Control, the U.S. Department of Education, the American Association of School Administrators, as well as numerous books devoted to the quality movement, have been valuable resources for the writing of this book.
