Preface
The two standout features of this 17th edition are a much-refined 12-chapter presentation and a fresh, compelling collection of 26 cases. A combination chapters/cases text is eminently suitable for courses where instructors wish to provide students with a foundation in the core concepts and analytical tools of strategic management as a prelude to having them work through a series of case assignments and/or participate in a strategy simulation exercise in which the class is divided into teams of two to five members and each team manages a company that competes head-to-head against companies run by the other teams. Two best-selling state-of-the-art online strategy simulations, The Business Strategy Game and GLO-BUS, are optional companions for this text—both simulations were created by this text's senior author as a means for instructors to give students an engaging, learn-by-doing experience in crafting and executing a strategy and applying the concepts and analytical tools covered in the chapters.
CHANGES, IMPROVEMENTS, AND DIFFERENTIATING FEATURES
As in any substantive revision, the chapter coverage has been trimmed in some areas, expanded in others. The content of two chapters in the prior edition has been condensed into a single chapter in this edition. A new section on strategic leadership has been added. There is important new coverage of corporate and environmental sus-tainability. As always, much effort has gone into refining the explanations of core concepts and analytical tools, updating and refreshing the examples, and including the latest research findings pertinent to a first course in strategy. At the end of each chapter, you will now find (1) "Assurance of Learning Exercises" which will help you measure student comprehension of the chapter content, and (2) "Exercises for Simulation Participants," which tightly connect the topics covered in the chapters to the issues and decisions that students have to wrestle with in managing their simulation coin-pany. However, we have preserved the fundamental character that has driven the text's success over three decades—the chapter content continues to be solidly mainstream and balanced, very much in step with the best academic thinking and contemporary management practice.
Complementing the text presentation is a powerhouse lineup of 26 diverse, timely, and thoughtfully crafted cases. Thanks to the talented efforts of dedicated case researchers in strategic management across the woHd, we have been fortunate in assembling a set of high-interest cases with unusual ability to work magic in the classroom. Great cases make it far easier for you to drive home valuable lessons in the whys and hows of successfully crafting and executing strategy. Many ofthe cases in this edition involve high-profile companies, and all are framed around issues and circumstances tightly
