CHAPTER1High above the glistening Swiss Alps, a lone hawk soared and dipped through the brilliant sky. Twisting and gliding with effortless ease among the magnificent peaks, the hawk gradually began his descent. Below him was the village of Dorfli. ChaletUke houses resplendent in their colors of yellow, blue, and salmon pink gleamed brightly in the afternoon light. The hawk swooped low over the church steeple, the highest point in the village, just as the church bells began their call to evening worship and ended this October day in the year 1915. As the hawk swept up the Aim, the mountain above Dorfli, away from the sound of the bells, many of the hard-working people of the village began their walk to the church to offer their thanks and prayers. They were grateful that their country had so far been spared the horrors of the war raging on three of Switzerland's borders.1
