PREFACE
In the preparation of this book I had in mind the requirements of those preparing for the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level in Mathematics, and specifically those using the Alternative Syllabus. I have tried to work out an order of presentation of the various topics in Mathematics which will form a basis for the sound teaching of the subject in any Grammar School. The subject matter of the book is so framed that there is some Geometry, some Algebra, some Arithmetic and some Trigonometry in most of the chapters, with as much correlation as possible. At the end of each of the chapters 1-32 there is a test paper on G.C.E. " 0 " level Alternative Syllabus lines. The scheme used as a basis for the book has been tried out in my department very successfully for both good and weak pupils, and the papers have been used as a major part of the week's homework.
The examples on each part of the work have been very carefully graded, and in geometry there are many numerical as well as theoretical exercises.
The last three chapters are intended as a starting point for the study of the Calculus and Co-ordinate Geometry. They are only intended for the brighter pupils, but it has been my experience that the top sets in mathematics in most Grammar Schools can cope with some extra work. For those going on to the Sixth Form to study Science or Mathematics this extra work is of great benefit.
The presentation of the bookwork is not meant to be " formal ". It is merely an attempt to cover the whole of Fifth Form Mathematics in one thoroughly sound book which may be employed as a text-book for class use and as a guide to systematic revision for examinations.
Mathematical principles have been strongly emphasised throughout, and experience has shown that the methods employed can and do make good mathematicians. At the same time the simpler side of
