Singing at Christmas is a custom endeared by young and old alike; it has become as traditional as the crib in the manger, the festive tree, and the stocking hopefully "hung by the chimney with care." In preparing Christmas in Song, the thought paramount has been to provide in one convenient volume, a collection of every type and style of appropriate composition, well-known and otherwise, and not to limit the scope of the work to any one arbitrary classification. The music of Christmas knows no such bound or restriction by the multitudes that cherish it. For generations it has spread freely from country to country and from clime to clime, finding favor and winning friends by merit and homeliness alone. The contents includes many fine examples of carols and noels, hymns of praise and worship, and merry songs and melodies. Some are old, having been in existence a thousand or more years, while others are of a comparatively recent origin, dating back within the memory of living man. The entire volume, with few exceptions, can be used for unisonal singing in the manner customary with music characteristically folk, while the trained choir or groups of singers experienced in part singing can readily harmonize every composition in the collection.
