- Xi - INTRODÜCnON This is a report on the first of a series of Study Tours being organized under the PAO/UNDP Programme, in cooperation with the People's Republic of China (IKT/76/015), The Study Tour took place from 28 April to 24 May 1977 and its purpose was to acquaint senior staff from developing countries with practices in the recycling of organic wastes in agriculture and to exchange e^erience« The Study Group oonsisted of 20 participants - 17 from countries in Asia, Africa and the Near East and three from FAO. In all, 17 nationalities were represented (see Annex 8 Üst of Participants), After being introduced in Peldng, the group travelled extensively in the Provinces of Jiangsu, Guangdong, Shanxi, Hebei and in the area of Shanghai (see Annex 6 Prograume)» Rxoellent relations were established with the Chinese hosts concerned with planning and carrying out the study programme. The major part of the report is devoted to the main subject of the Study Tour — reoyoling of organic wastes in agriculture - and it emphasizes the practical aspects and i^plicability of the methods studied in China* The chapters on the various aspeots of organic reoyoling are followed by notes on visits to agricultural institutes, prodaotion brigades, eto* iMch should help in understanding the whole operation of organic recycling practioes. These are followed by a chapter containing suggestions for follow-^ activities on the experiences gained in CMna in order to ensure that the knowledge acquired will be applied in the widest possible way in the partioipants' own countries. Por easier reading, hectare (ha) and Jdlogranme (kg) or ton (t) have been used as measuring units and US Dollars (S) as a monetary unit but a table showing how these compare with the Chinese vnits is given on page xiv. Each member of the grotq) has oontribnted to the report but special oredit goes to Dr. L.S. Tadava and Dr. HJT.A. Alaa El-Din for their efforts in its finalization.
