PREFACE
To set forth clearly the economic principles that underlie the making and seUing of chemicals; that is the primary pnrpose~oFthis book. But in the following pages I have endeavored also to show the part played by chemicals in the developrnent of modern industrialism and to place the chemical industry in its proper relationships within our economic system.
My own experience has shown time and again that such a book can be useful to the student of chemistry, to the young recruit in the ranks of chemical industry, and to many persons in different walks of life who today want to know why and how this chemical business operates. These three groups of readers have been constantly in mind.
As publisher of chemical business magazines for the past fourteen years, I have had many opportunities to learn how such a book might be useful to young men entering the chemical field and the questions which many persons are asking about the chemical business that it might answer. Whether the chemical recruit enlists in plant or laboratory or office he should know the plan of the campaign; and though the tactics are of necessity concerned with chemical reactions and technique, I have tried to treat these matters so strictly from the commercial (as against the technical) point of view as to make them understandable without a knowledge of chemistry.
In like manner this little book should intelligibly answer the queries of many who appreciate the modern importance of chemicals but who are mystified by an industry
