INTRODUCTION
Above nil else do not lose your desire to walk. Kierkegaard
Scientists now believe that the earliest humans who left the forest to live on the African plains several million years ago were nomadic. In other words they walked. But they didn't walk just to fetch water or to find food; their walldng was a perpetual migration as they followed the movements of the animals they hunted or as they moved with the seasons. The evidence of our ancient walldng ancestry is built into the very design of our bodies: apes' feet are flat, ours have sprung arches, confirming us as creatures made to walk. It is said that babies left to lie still will often cry and scream because instinct tells them that if they have been still for more than a few minutes and cannot sense movement their mothers must have condnued on their long walk without them.
