Preface A book such as this one is a journey of personal discovery, as well as an exploration of ideas and principles. In no sense is it a theoretical treatise; the subject-matter is too emotional and intense for that. Nevertheless, a serious attempt has to be made to discover what principles are of importance in making decisions about human life around the time of its inception. For Christians, the aim will be to discover what light the Bible can provide in this area. Even when this has been done, however, an enormous amount of thought is still required to transform the general principles provided by the Bible into the specific guide-lines required for decision-making. There are no slick answers and there are many controversies and dilemmas. Frequently, it is the controversial aspects of these issues that dominate discussions. While there can be no escape from controversy, my hope is that even those who disagree with my stance on various points will look beyond such disagreement to the underlying principles. To some, my stance on certain issues may appear liberal; to others it may appear conservative. Whatever the reaction, the one thing I ask is that my arguments be taken seriously and
