Preface
The Third Edition of Beginning Algebra offers an accessible first course in algebra. We assume that many of the students using this bcok have never taken a course in algebra, while others may have taken such a course but are in need of a review. In either case the student's only prerequisite is some knowledge of arithmetic.
Feedback from instructors and students, and our own experience in teaching from the book, led us to make the following changes in the Third Edition:
• A review of the basic operations of arithmetic, with a special emphasis on fractions, is included in the appendix.
• Exponents are introduced in Chapter I, so that the order of operations can be discussed completely at this time.
• Linear equations and inequalities are presented in a more easily taught sequ^ce in Chapter 2.
• Prime factorization is covered in greater detail, and a table of prime factors is provided on page 3 18.
• Least common denominators are treated in a new section in Chapter 5, to prepare students to handle addition and subtraction of algebraic fractions.
• Word problems are discussed in greater detail, and new, more realistic, word problems have been added throughout the book.
