Michelangelo Pistoletto
is an Italian artist. As an extension of The Mirror of Judgement, his current exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, London (to 17 September), Pistoletto has created a 18-page intervention in ArtReview titled Do it yourself for this issue. The exhibition is a site-specific installation featuring a labyrinth (a form the artist has returned to several times) in which is hidden a series of sculptures and discrete installations. In an interview with Germano Celant in the accompanying exhibition catalogue, Pistoletto explains, "The labyrinth is articulated by chance. In the universe everything happens by chance, everything is created by chance. Looking into the mirror, we see that everything happens according to the phenomenon of relativity, the driver of which is chance. In the labyrinth of our life we try not to succumb to chance but rather to use it, deciding what to do from one moment to the next. There is no longer a need to think of an author as being external, but rather as being embodied in every detail of the work. If the work and the universe are closely identifiable as one, then our presence is also part of this authorship. What we are doing is therefore the beginning of an artistic spirituality that offers an alternative to religious spirituality."
Tim Gutt
is a London-based photographer. Alongside other publications, his work has appeared in Vogue, Fantastic Man, Wallpaper*, 032c and POP. He has previously collaborated with Shona Heath, Abake, Pet Shop boys, B Store, Peter Jensen and William Hall. This month he took the photographs for artist Michelangelo Pistoletto's intervention in ArtReview. His influences include David Cronenburg, David Lynch, Pina Bausch, desert storms (not the war), garlic and good supermarket pasta.
Neal Brown
is an artist and writer. He is the author of books on Tracey Emin, Billy Childish and Mat Collishaw and regularly writes poetry for Dwang magazine under the name Johnny Goldcunt. This month he profiles Marc Camille Chaimowicz. For further reading he recommends Catherine Wood's essay on the artist in the catalogue of his 2005 exhibition at Kunstverein Düsseldorf; the 2005 book on Celebration? Real Life Revisited; Stuart Morgan's What the Butler Saiv (1996); and Chaimowicz's own book Café du Reve (1985).
Ian Davies and Tom Watt
are responsible for ArtReview's design and art direction. This month they redesigned the magazine. Their influences include Hans-Peter Feldmann's practice of collecting and ordering disparate imagery, ArtReview's archives - particular issues from the 1970s and 80s - and a 'banging' mix CD that Davies's friend made him, highlights of which apparently include Power of the Pum by Lady Saw, Push Back by Timberlee, and Bill by Gaza Kim & Lisa Hype.
Matthew Partridge
is a writer and art critic. After stints in Durban and Cape Town he now lives in Johannesburg. He has taught art history at Rhodes University. This month he met Nicholas Hlobo. Their conversation that didn't make the edit included the widening of the Saratoga Road, growing up in the Transkei, the coffee at Arts on Main, and the welfare of the artist's two dogs, a Rhodesian Ridgebackand an Alsatian.
Sue Williamson
is a Cape Town-based artist and this year is a Rockefeller Foundation Creative Arts Fellow at the Bellagio Center in Italy. She is represented by the Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg and Cape Town. This month she profiles South Africa's art scene. For further reading she recommends her survey book South African Art Now (2009).
Sean O'Toole
is a journalist and author based in Cape Town. He was editor of the magazine Art South Africa for six years. This month he met Julia Rosa Clark. Their conversation that didn't make the edit included a mutual admiration of Cape Town's foliage, urban canyons and, of course, the city's famous mountain.
