I i 1 ' ' , , ; I • ¦ ' n V'MV , •', I A To the north ofAlpago, the Wi Nevegal and Cesen alps, in cor-WfiB^ respondence with the Piave's mjm high basin and wedged between Friuli and Trentino, the province of Belluno consists of three historically differentiated territorial areas: Feltre to the southwest, in an area projecting towards Trentojrom the 6th century B.C. o'^^iAamoftheReti (anEtuscoid people: Feltre's name appears to be connected with Volterra and Velletri) andfrom 140 B.C. a Roman munici-pium attributed to the Menenia tribe; in the centre, Belluno itself set on the site of Cavarzano, assigned by ancient sources to the Veneti and later a muni-cipium attributed, along with Agordino andAlpago, to thePapiria tribe; and to the north, Cadore colonised by the Celts (the name derives from the Gallic catu-brigum, "fortress") belonging to the territory q/"Iulium Camicum (Zuglio, near Tolmezzo) and attributed to the Claudia tribe. The Ptave valley, connected via the Cismon to the Valsugana, and hence to the territory of Padua and theAdige valley (following the itinerary that was later taken up by the Roman road, via Claudia Augusta Altinate) and through the low pre-Alpine passes to Oderzo and the lagoon areas ofAltino and Concordia, represented a natural route for communication and cultural and commercial exchanges between the Venetian territories on the plain and the Celtic ones beyond the Alps, as far as the mining centre ofHallstatt and beyond: place names and inscriptions testify to the sporadic presence ofthe Celts in the areas inhabited by the Veneti (including the name 2 Belluno, from the Celtic belo-dunum,
