PrefaceFor six weeks the disciples had stalked the woman. They watched her house while she slept, followed her to and from work, and waited for her when she visited friends. Since the death of their leader, their numbers had declined. Some had committed suicide. Others had given in to despair and would not move from their rooms, but those who survived were obsessed by revenge, and were the stronger for thatOn the day she visited the doctor's office, two disciples followed her and sat beside her in the waiting room. They took note of her strained expression. She was obviously in pain and they gloated over her discomfort."Miss Reynolds." The receptionist called to her and pointed toward a door. Slowly, with the gait of a cripple, she moved across the room and pushed die door open. A stranger looked up at her, a young doctor, fresh-faced and smiling. She blinked in confusion."Doctor Johnston has left the practice," he said. "Won't you sit down?" She closed the door and sat by his desk.
