PREFACE This volume grew out of a conference in honor of the 65th birthday of Kenneth MacCorquodale, an exceptionally eloquent spokesman for the field of the experimental analysis of behavior. PREFACE This volume grew out of a conference in honor of the 65th birthday of Kenneth MacCorquodale, an exceptionally eloquent spokesman for the field of the experimental analysis of behavior. Plans for the conference began in 1982 with a casual conversation between the editors. As the possibility of the conference and this volume became a reality, it seemed only fitting that the meeting be held near the University of Minnesota where Professor MacCorquodale had taught for 37 years. Financial support provided by the College of Liberal Arts, the Department of Psychology and the Nolte Center for Continuing Education (all of the University of Minnesota) made it possible to assemble 16 of the foremost scholars in psychology and the analysis of behavior. Gordon Amundson, Associate Director of the Nolte Center for Continuing Education, and Paula Sanders, Program Associate, were instrumental in bringing together the remarkable group of scientists who contributed to this volume. They expended extraordinary efforts to make the event successful, and no simple statement of gratitude adequately expresses our appreciation. Among the others who made invaluable contributions were Dean Fred Lukerman of the University of Minnesota, College of Liberal Arts, and Jack Burton, Editorial Vice President, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. Numerous University of Minnesota staff and students contributed in large and small ways to both the conference and to preparation of the manuscripts in this volume. To our friend and colleague Celia Wölk Gershenson, who selflessly devoted vast numbers of hours working both on the conference and resulting volume, goes our deepest thanks. Her dedication to Professor MacCorquodale is manifest in her assistance with countless editorial details throughout the volume.
