PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION Since the first edition was published, new developments in thermodjmamics have in certain cases reached such widespread importance that an introductory treatment is particularly desirable, in order to make them more widely accessible. New sections have been added to deal with experimental and theoretical progress in the thermodynamics of condensed phases, in such fields as melting, rubber-like solids, and the formal thermodynamics of continuous phase transitions. A chapter has also been added to illustrate applied calculations of thermodynamic functions in cases of current importance. Certain modifications have also been made to chapters in the first edition. Grateful acknowledgement is made of the use of comments on the first edition by various correspondents.
