VORWORT Preface Spátestens seit der Ausstellung Birth of the Cool (1997) verbindet sich die Maierei von Alex Katz mit der Vorstellung der Coolness. Mit der Umwidmung der Coolness des Jazz aus den fünfziger Jahren zu einer Kategorie der Maierei sollte nicht nur unsere allgemeine Vorstellung von amerikanischer Maierei an sich revidiert werden. Vielmehr diente die Charakterisierung von Philip Taaffe, Ross Bleckner, Christopher Wool und insbesondere von Alex Katz als Cool Painters dazu, deren Eigenstándigkeit und Unabhángigkeit vom amerikanischen abstrakten Expressionismus ebenso wie von der Pop Art und dem Minimalismus zu deklarieren. Obwohl Katz wie Róbert Rauschenberg oder Jasper Johns von der Generation her zu den Pionieren der Pop Art záhlt, war er von Beginn an mit seinen eigenartigen figurativen Bildern und den Cut Outs ein Grenzgánger zwischen Realismus und Ungegenstándlichkeit. Cool an dieser Kunst, so Bice Curiger 1997, ist die kontroliierte Emotionalitát, die Distanz, die groBe Sachlichkeit: sie ist nicht dadaistisch, nicht l'art pour l'art, kein épater le bourgeois, kein intellektuelles Spiel. Nicht Pop und dessen Fortschreibung, sondern das Pflegen derTradition der Coolness sei Alex Katz eigen. In der Tat legt Alex Katz selbst in einer autobiografischen Notiz die Fáhrte zum Cool Jazz: Stan Getz war der erste Musiker, der mir wirklich etwas sagte. Seine Musik war wie coole Maierei, technisch brillant und lyrisch. Spáter lernte ich Miles Davis schátzen und Sonny Rollins. Ich versuchte zu der Zeit, mit der Maierei etwas Áhnliches zu machen. Das 1950 erschienene Miles-Davis-Album Birth of the Cool ist lángst ein Markstein der Musikgeschichte. If the painting of Alex Katz hadn't been associated with the notion of 'coolness' before, then it most certainly was after the exhibition Birth ofthe Cool in 1997. The transfer of the 'coolness' of the jazz of the 1950s to a category of painting would not only lead to a revision of our view of American painting, but rather, the characterisation of Philip Taaffe, Ross Bleckner, Christopher Wool, and especially Alex Katz as 'cool painters' served as a declaration of their ability to stand alone, fully independent from American Abstract Expressionism, as well as from Pop Art and minimalism. Although Alex Katz, like Róbert Rauschenberg or Jasper Johns, belongs to the same generation as the pioneers of Pop Art, he walked the line between realism and non-objectiveness from the very beginning, with his unusual figurative pictures and 'cut-outs'. What is 'cool' about this art, according to Bice Curiger in 1997, is the controlled emotionality, the reserve, the great objectivity: it is not Dadaistic, not 'art for art's sake', not to jar the conventions ('épater le bourgeois'), not an intellectual game. Not Pop and its development, but the cultivation of the tradition of Coolness is what defines Alex Katz. In fact, in an autobiographical note, Alex Katz himself indicates his path to Cool Jazz: 'Stan Getz was the first musician who really said anything to me. His music was like cool painting - technically brilliant and lyricai. Later I learned to appreciate Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins. At that time I tried to do something similar with painting.' The Miles Davis album Birth of the Cool that came out in 1950 has long been a milestone in the history of music. There was no film of the 'Nouvelle Vague' of the 1950s that did not live from the melancholy aloofness of Miles Davis's music. None of the wild expressionism of a Charly Parker, no hectic bebop: Cool Jazz was in its planned arrangements more abstract, more distant.
