—Headline, New York Times Book Review, January 24, 1993
In an academic and professional career spanning nearly five decades, George Gerbner has published hundreds of articles and research reports and edited over a dozen books. Yet, remarkably, although his theories, his research, and his activism have had immense impacts, there exists no single volume devoted to his own writing. That is the very significant gap that this book is intended to fill.
In extremely broad strokes, we can sum up George Gerbner's biography to date in five basic periods:
1919-1939: Gerbner grows up in Hungary, has promising fiiture as a poet, and is drawn to the study of rural folklore; leaves Hungary to avoid conscription to Nazi side of impending war 1939-1956; becomes U.S. citizen and soldier, has exploits as paratrooper;
in California, works as journalist and writer, shifts into education and obtains graduate degrees
