Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The pledge should be rendered by standing with the right hand over the heart. However, civilians will always show full respect to thé flag when the pledge is given by merely standing at attention, men removing headdress. Rules for Saluting the Flag During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag, or when the flag passes in a parade or is displayed during the playing of the national anthem, civilians should stand at attention and face the flag. Men should remove the headdress and with the right hand hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Men without hats and women should salute by piacing the right hand over the heart. The flag in a parade should be saluted at the moment it passes. When the national anthem is played without display of the flag, civilians should stand at attention facing toward the music, men removing the headdress.
