PREFACE.
This grammar is intended to be of service to students of three types : in the first place, to students who possess already some knowledge of the language and who desire a clear and compact grammatical reference book ; secondly, to students of science, economics and commerce for whom a reading knowledge of German is important and who for this purpose must acquaint themselves with its inflexions and structure ; and lastly, to students in evening institutes and other adults commencing the study of German, for whose needs but small provision at presefit exists. In this connection it is intended to be used in conjunction with a combined Reader and Translation book to appear shortly and forming together with it a two years' or, in the case of apt pupils or intensive teaching, a one year's course. We would also recommend the course to the attention of teachers of German in secondary and other schools with the suggestion that it would provide suitable material for two years' work leading to the School Certificate Examination. We are grateful to Mr. W. F. Mainland, Reader in Modern Languages at the School of Economics, for revising the proofs.
