Bővebb ismertető
ÍPE^ÍfgKg Like the two previous Forum anthologies (The Art of TESOL, which contained a selection of articles that had appeared in the English Teaching Forum during the years 1963 through 1972, and A TEFL Anthology [1973-78]), this volume consists of as many of the articles as could reasonably be included from the years just preceding its compilation and publication. As in the earlier volumes, the articles are arranged under generál subject-matter headings. These headings are fewer than in the earlier anthologies, and differ from them in a way that has at least somé historical interest. Whereas The Art of TESOL presented its offerings under a number of discrete categories, we found such a classification both impossible and undesirable in the current volume, mainly because of the trend toward integration of skills that has characterized TESOL methodology in recent years. To be sure, there are several articles on each of the four basic skills, but the "skills" section includes as weil a number of articles on integrated skills and on teaching English for specific purposes. The section on communication alsó reflects an area of special interest during the past decade or so. A few articles on evaluation show the continuing but not emphatic interest in that subject during the period covered, while the teaching of literature, which has more recently become a matter of rather intense debate in somé parts of the world, is alsó modestly represented. The "Perspectives and Theory" section, which introduces the entire collection, includes several state-of-the-art articles from the Forum''s 20th anniversary issues, as weil as a number of articles on notions and functions and somé other approaches that had rather recently come to the fore. The articles selected were those that the compilers felt would be most useful both to classroom teachers and to those responsible for teacher education programs. While space restrictions made it impossible to include all of the articles that the compilers had originally selected, they hope that this volume will prove practically helpful to a number of readers. Special appreciation is due to Richárd Boyum, Dámon Anderson, Delores Parker, Betty Taska, Tom Miller, and Ruth Montalvan, who selected the articles, to Mary Jo Boya, Susan G. Pollock, and Helaine Michaels Klein, who designed the book and prepared the text, and to Charles Seifert and Frank Smolinski, who proofread the anthology.
