PREFACE This book is designed for pupils who desire to acquaint themselves v^ith the phraseology used in business. It can take the place of our second book for those who desire a mere business knowledge of English; if, however, a thorough knowledge of that language is wanted, this book should be alternated with the second book. The lessons are to be given as follows: The teacher reads a few lines at a time; then explains the new words through the association of ideas, i. e., by examples containing such previously learned words as lead the student through the context to a comprehension of the phrase in question. The exercises offer the teacher abundant suggestions for such association of ideas. The student will then read the same lines, the teacher correcting the pronunciation and asking a great many questions (the more, the better) so as to make the student employ the new words until he is perfectly familiarized with their use and meaning.
