-After the people s uprising of September 9-th 1949 Bulgaria experienced a revival in the political, economic and spiritual spheres. The people's rule under the guidance of the communist party, with the fraternal selfless and most generous assistance of the Soviet Union, set the country upon the road to socialism. From a backward agrarian country Bulgaria has been changed into an advanced industrial-agrarian state with collective agriculture and modern economy. During the years of socialist changes the cultural and living standards of the people have been raised high. Science, art and education have been made available to the working people and have reached a great adwance. Science became a decisive factor in all spheres of our life. Today 26 higher educational institutions shelter a teaching staff of over 6500 professors, associate professors and assistants and over 85 000 students. Bulgaria holds an advanced place in the world as to the number of students in proportion to her population. The students enjoy enviable material conditions; more than half of them receive state scholarships. A great number of scientific institutions and centers came into existence, some attached to the educational establishments, others to de_ partments and still others attached to the two academies - the Bulgarian Academy of sciences and the Academy of Agricultural sciences. Bulgaria holds one of the foremost places as to number of published books per head. The public health services were laid along socialism lines.
